FAQs
Is this a licensed school or daycare?
Durham Nature School is a nature-based early learning program and does not operate as a licensed daycare or private school.
What ages is the program for?
Our Preschool Forest Program is designed for children ages 2-4, our Kindergarten Readiness Program & Summer Camp is designed for children aged 3–5 (homeschool children and those eligible for Kindergarten in September 2026), with additional nature programs offered for older children (5-8 years) on a seasonal basis. Each program specifies age range.
What does “kindergarten readiness” mean in your program?
Our approach supports social-emotional development, independence, communication, and early learning foundations through play and outdoor exploration. We do not use formal academics or worksheets — readiness is supported naturally and developmentally.
Is the program fully outdoors?
Yes. Programs are held 100% outdoors on private forested land beside Heber Down Conservation Area. We have a shelter, tables, and a composting toilet, but no indoor classroom space.
What happens in bad weather?
Our programs run rain, snow, or shine. Children build resilience and confidence through all-weather outdoor play, with safety always prioritized.
